"Brown Bag It On March 6 and Help VNA Meals on Wheels!

The second annual “Brown Bag for VNA Meals on Wheels” campaign is asking individuals to take their lunches to work or school on March 6 and donate what they would usually spend eating out to the Visiting Nurse Association’s Meals on Wheels program.

The effort is one of many events scheduled across the U.S. in March to show support for Meals on Wheels and the importance of the program for the homebound elderly in our communities. “The amount of money that a person typically spends on lunch could cover the cost of Meals on Wheels for two or three seniors,” notes Robert Carpenter, president and chief executive officer of the Visiting Nurse Association.

“By donating that sum instead to VNA Meals on Wheels and taking a ‘brown bag’ lunch to work on March 6, we can help ensure that home-delivered meals will continue to reach our frail elderly in Dallas County.”

This year’s “Brown Bag for VNA Meals on Wheels” campaign is especially important because of the growing requests for Meals on Wheels and the increasing financial support required to meet these needs.“Brown Bag for VNA Meals on Wheels” also seeks to encourage volunteer support from individuals, businesses, community service organizations, and churches to deliver Meals on Wheels.

March was chosen for the campaign because it was during this month in 1972 that the Older Americans Act of 1965 was amended to create the first national nutrition program for the elderly.
