Northwood University MBA Program off to running start

Cedar Hill News - Colleges and Universities

CEDAR HILL – Northwood University has begun offering a 27-month, part-time Master of Business Administration degree (MBA) – a program enabling working professionals the opportunity to develop skills that will advance them in their personal and professional goals.

The DeVos MBA incorporates an Integrated Management approach that shows students how all components of business work together.  The integrated curriculum includes courses such as Leadership, Critical Thinking, Reasoning & Analysis and Satisfying Customers and Shareholders.

Northwood’s MBA program is part of the DeVos Graduate School, which is new to Dallas, yet well-established at Northwood’s Michigan and Switzerland campuses with a combined 17 years of course offerings.

Dr. Kevin Fegan, provost of Northwood’s Texas campus, said this program creates highly effective executives and managers through a unique process of personal and professional transformation.

“Northwood has always provided its undergraduate students a first-rate business education, with an emphasis on building character and developing the leader in every student,” Dr. Fegan said. “Now, Northwood is providing a dynamic MBA learning experience that works with the demands of today’s competitive marketplace. Education is a partnership at Northwood, so our MBA program works with you.”

The program is taught in a cohort format, in which a group of 20 to 35 students attend the entire program – and all classes - together.  The fall program attracted candidates from a plethora of backgrounds, specifically in education and career, including students from fields such as medical, sales and marketing, politics, information technology and human resources. This diversity brings a certain richness to the program, which is based on a student-driven, discussion-based learning through the case-study approach. Case studies encourage students to be active partners, not passive listeners.  This unique delivery method requires students to analyze real companies with real management issues - and share their feedback and analysis with their cohort members.

Northwood’s MBA program creates an environment that encourages growth and transformation in every student.  The high level of involvement, commitment and self-evaluation, as well as peer and faculty feedback, encourages such an environment.

Dr. Tara Peters, a profdevos-on-tx-campusessor in the MBA program and Northwood’s division chair of Management, said Northwood’s MBA provides students with an enriched educational opportunity that allows them to actively participate and develop skills that will make them leaders in the global marketplace.

“Our students are action-oriented, developing the acumen and knowledge needed to create and capitalize on opportunities, solve problems and respond ethically,” Dr. Peters said. “We want to educate the best MBA students - not the most.  As a result, we focus on helping our students increase their personal effectiveness through Harvard case study analysis, which is designed to provide the foundation for addressing real business issues. Then, our students are able to embark on a journey of discovery that leads to real transformation.”

Northwood has expanded its offerings to two start dates, including a Spring cohort beginning in January and a Fall cohort in August.  Applications are currently being accepted for both semesters. Attendees will have an opportunity to speak directly with a graduate representative to learn more about the DeVos methodology, the admissions process, financial aid and available scholarships.
